Not A Bucket List…But A List For Life

March 23, 2013

My youngest son writes a blog of letters to his daughter called – “Letters to Amaia”. I thought you might enjoy this one and got his permission to pass it along.

AmaiaDear Amaia,

You are now almost 7 months old and you have come so far. It seems like just yesterday I held you in my arms for the first time and you struggled to move your arms and open your eyes. Now you are crawling, smiling, and laughing. Time is not stopping. You are growing every day and it makes me think of the bright future you have.

The other day I was watching the movie “The Bucket List”. It struck a thought in my head about the life I have lived and the things I have done in my life. I want you to live your life with no regrets and never be afraid of failure. In the movie two friends decided to live their last days to the fullest by making a list of things they wanted to do before they died. The lesson learned from this movie was that time machines do not exist. I cannot go back to read you a book that I didn’t because I was too tired. I cannot go back and write you these letters.

Recently I sat down and wrote a list. This is not a bucket list, but a life list. I call it a life list because we shouldn’t do these things because we fear death, but that we embrace life with a zeal that God created us to possess. One of my favorite quotes by Henry David Thoreau paints my message perfectly so that you will live your life free of regret. “Never look back unless you plan on going that way.”
