Firefighter Kasselman

August 2, 2012

A Fire Chief has difficulty in establishing a close relationship with his firefighters – time just doesn’t allow it. I wish it did.

The obituary was posted by fellow firefighter Chris Simpson. His name was Brendon Kasselman. He was just 31 years old and was known as “Tank.”

Brendon was a firefighter in Leavenworth during my time as Fire Chief. I retired and moved on to another small department in southwest Kansas, but I never forgot Brendon or the other firefighters.

Brendon and I were the same and we were different. On the similar side we both served in the most noble of professions. On the different side was the length of our careers.

Yet, years of service means little. A famous person once said, “It’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years.”

Brendon’s years were good and it was an honor to have served with him.

Rest in peace my fellow firefighter.
