Goober – One of the Lovables

May 9, 2012

Every organization has them. These are the folks whose light bulb seems a bit dim, yet they also seem to be those most full of love. They are what I would call the Lovables.

One of those Lovables – by television character – left this earth a few days ago. His name was George Lindsey, but most of us knew him simply as “Goober.”

The television industry knows that you must have a Lovable to make life entertaining and fun. There was Kramer and George on Seinfield. The series MASH had Radar and Frank. And All in the Family had Meathead. The so-called normal character is boring without his polar opposite.

We watch these funny movies and fail to realize what it is that makes them so appealing. By doing so we also fail to realize what the real life Lovables bring to the job place.

Life has its ups and downs. Yet the downs for the Lovables seems to be shorter – both in magnitude and duration. I can only speculate why. Maybe it’s because of the way their brains are wired, or maybe their hearts are simply a bit larger.

So, the next time you find yourself thinking or you’re about to say something bad to a Goober Firefighter or a Goober EMT, say instead the immortal
Goober Cary Grant impersonation – “Judy, Judy, Judy.”

And, if you should die any time soon – when you get to Heaven, “Say Hey to Goober.”
