Hudson Disaster

August 24, 2011

There was a big disaster in the City of Hudson the other night – fatalities and multiple injuries – it was a real mess. Luckily, it was all just a disaster drill.

The scenario was a big anhydrous ammonia leak. The facilitator made conditions just right for it to have maximum devastation. What would a disaster drill be if it didn’t cause more than the emergency providers could handle?

Some of the feedback from the exercise included:
– Know local resources
– Use ICS
– There’s a need for more hazardous material training
– Tactical dispatch is a great idea, but need some details refined
– Need to make sure and identify and utilize industry experts
– Need to work on evacuation procedures

These exercises are important to our community and they also bring us into alignment to receive grant funds. Furthermore, the exercises fulfill the disaster management requirements of several agencies.

The exercises will always be facilitated in a manner that doesn’t put participants on the spot – if they prefer to simply observe. And, the food served isn’t bad either.
