A Formidable Opponent

July 22, 2011

The year was 1982. His name was Randal “Tex” Cobb and he was fighting World boxing champion Larry Holmes. Tex didn’t give the champ much of a fight, but pummelled as he was – he just wouldn’t go down for the count.

That was the same case with a shelter belt fire on the Stafford and Edward County line. The first round started around a week ago. Fire crews from both counties made another visit – the fourth round – Thursday afternoon.

Again, the temperatures were well over 100 degrees.

Station Chief Rob Murrow recognized, in this “fourth round”, that the fire was mimicking Tex Cobb. So, he decided to cut the legs off the old fellow.

Murrow broke out a big chain saw and dropped four of the sixty-foot trees in the shelterbelt. Hopefully, the shelter belt is “out for the count.” Firefighters from two counties are crossing their fingers.
