Caution Low Clearance

July 4, 2011

“Caution Low Clearance” – That was the message on the sign of the collapsed metal building. Too bad that wasn’t the main problem at 1756 NE 20th Ave.

No, the main problem was there were about 100 man-sized tires, a used car lot full of abandoned vehicles, and a shelter belt – and they were all on fire.

Another factor with this fire was the blistering heat. Firefighters needed plenty of water – for both the fire and firefighters.

The heavy black smoke could be seen for miles. Firefighters set up a water shuttle and were on scene for two hours and thirty-three minutes.

It appeared the fire was the result of sparks from one of three giant burn barrels.
