Somebody You Know

May 3, 2011

The dispatch message was short and simple. The crew needed to respond to Stafford Hospital for an emergency transfer to Promise Regional Hospital. What the crew didn’t know was this would be one of those calls labeled “somebody you know”.

On their arrival the crew found some of the patient’s family standing in the lobby. That narrowed down the possibilities. It must’ve been the intrigue on their faces that prompted one of the family to offer up who it was they would be transporting – Stafford City Police Chief Doug Brown.

Now, one must keep in mind that Doug Brown isn’t just the Police Chief – he’s also a firefighter and a medic for the ambulance service.

The name Doug Brown is simply synonymous with emergency service in Stafford County. So, you can imagine the shock felt when the crew discovered the name of their patient.

Many EMS providers work their whole full-time careers without ever transporting a close friend or relative. Unfortunately, this is the second time within a month that Stafford County EMS personnel have done just that.

Even though the crew was apprehensive about the nature of the transfer, they went about their job with only a moment’s hesitation. The transfer went off without a hitch. It did help that the patient kept the moment light – offering to drive at one point during the trip.

The best part of this story is that everything checked out well for Doug. He got out of the hospital well in time to celebrate his 50th birthday on Sunday.

Happy Birthday Doug!
