Small Town Closeness

April 16, 2011

The tone goes off – “Hudson Station and St. John Station. Please respond to Hwy 281 near K19 for a vehicle on fire.”

That – give or take a few different words – was the message to firefighters this past Friday.

One unique thing about responding to emergencies in small communities is there’s a strong likelyhood that you’ll know the person having the emergency. Sometimes that relationship is very close.

The owner of the vehicle on fire was one of our own – Nick Lauffer.

Nick was headed back from a Paramedic class in Great Bend when he noticed a smell. He pulled the Tahoe over to check things out.

Then the smoke increased. Then came the flames.

Distance between fire and fire department is a critical part of the equation concerning firefighting success. The distance of this emergency was not in the “good” category.

Firefighters gave their best – but the triage was “Code Black.”
