Another Sad Prevention Story

Most Stafford County folks know about the K19 and Hwy 281 fatality accident that happened a week ago yesterday. This was the second fatality accident at that location within a year. Both accidents were the result of one driver failing to stop at the stop sign. And, both of those drivers were coming from the same direction.

I don’t claim to be a highway expert, but it seems like there’s something causing drivers difficulty with seeing the stop sign in time. I’m told this same problem occurred a number of times at the Hwy 281 and Hwy 50 intersection. After a number of fatalities; flashing lights, rumble strips, and additional signage was added at that location. There’s been no additional fatality accidents there since those changes.

The word is that now the State of Kansas is moving forward with the installation of rumble strips at K19 & Hwy 281. Prevention is always good, but it’s too bad this preventive step wasn’t taken before last Saturday.
