EMTs Expanding Their Scope

February 11, 2011

Stafford Station Crew

Stafford County EMTs will be able to perform new medical procedures in the very near future. The State of Kansas recently passed a change in the Scope of Practice for emergency responders. This change was the result of extensive study concerning the efficacy of patient care in the field.

New equipment has made it easier to collect diagnostic patient data that used to impossible to collect. The ability of the EMT to perform a procedure, relative to the collection of that data, is not the sole reason for the action. Collection of data can be passed on to a physician, thereby speeding up the patient’s care once they arrive at the hospital.

Some of things that an EMT will be able to do after the Scope of Practice changes include; Removal of a foreign body obstruction using forceps, automatic ventilator usage, administration of select medications, monitoring carbon dioxide levels.

The Scope of Practice change is required of every emergency service provider to maintain certification.
