Tribute to Fallen Firefighters

December 3, 2010

A little over a year ago, Stafford County Firefighter Dennis Simmons suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after fighting a wildland fire.

His wife Suzanne Simmons recently made an emotional, heartwarming trip  to the small, quaint City of Emmittsburg, Maryland.  Emmittsburg is the home of the National Fire Academy and also the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial.

Each year the families of firefighters that lost their lives in the line-of-duty are brought back to Emmittsburg.  The families participate in a memorial sevice that recognizes their loved ones.

Suzanne was given a beautiful maltese cross medalion as part of the ceremony.  Additonally, the Overland Park Firefighter who escorted Suzanne at the memorial gave her his badge.
